Why You Need A Beta Reader Who Doesn't Like You

Here's the problem with every beta reader you currently have: they know you. Your critique partner wants to stay your critique partner. Your spouse wants to stay married. So the feedback comes back sanded smooth — "the pacing felt a little slow in the middle, but I really liked it!" — and you revise nothing, because nobody handed you anything to revise.

How is this different from a human beta reader?

A human takes three weeks, reads on their phone, and sends back a shrug with adjectives. This takes 60 seconds and returns structure: impressions, strengths, problems, line flags with quotes, and a priority list. It misses some things a brilliant human catches. It never misses the things your friends are too polite to say.

What should I paste in?

One scene or chapter opening per run — free up to 2,500 words a run. Paste the chapter you're least sure about, not your showpiece. A diagnosis of your best pages tells you nothing about the book.

Will it just flatter me?

No. The report format forbids padding and generic advice. If your stakes are invisible, it says where. If a character is cardboard, it names them. If the pages are genuinely strong, it says that too — and tells you what to protect while you fix the rest.
